Obstacles and Options

Obstacles are neither good or bad. They simply are. Obstacles exist because they do. The more we see the thing as it is, versus as we are, the less likely we are to take the thing personally. The size or scope of any given obstacle depends entirely on the person it is affecting. Proof lies in every inspirational tale you’ve ever encountered: from the person (or animal) who lost a primary sense or limb, to the person who thrived in the most unimaginable circumstances. The common thread in all of these stories is perspective. Despite the obstacle, it is perspective that gave that subject the option of choice… and ultimate solution.

Perspective is a word we throw around as if it’s a thing that magically occurs if we just set our minds to it. But the truth is that perspective comes with practice. It’s true that we all face obstacles of some sort in our day to day lives. How we perceive those obstacles grants size and scope. Perspective is the thing that changes a seemingly hopeless situation into a size and scope that might reveal a solution.

Does this mean that you should count your blessings? Yes. Does this mean that you should remind yourself of all the things that are going right in your life? Yes. Does this mean that you should work toward a more positive outlook about said obstacle? Yes. Does this mean that your obstacle will suddenly disappear if you do these things? Absolutely not.

The key to turning an obstacle into an option is to see it as separate from you. The obstacle is not happening to you. The obstacle is the obstacle. You have the power to choose what to do about it. That doesn’t mean the solution will magically present itself. But taking into account that you have choices is the beginning to turning your particular obstacle into an option. That gives you the power to let the obstacle stop you, or propel you in a direction around, under, over, or through it.

No one outside the borders of your skin has the power to diminish your obstacles. Only you can do that. First, you must believe you can. Like perspective, belief is not a magic pill that was only granted to the most faithful among us. You have to work at it. Small steps to accomplishments, victories, and growth are powerful tools to fuel this belief. Take into account who you are, where you are, and why you are. Let it lead you to compliments instead of criticisms about yourself. Fuel your belief with the conviction that you have all of the tools you need right now, in this moment, to grow.

There is no magic pill. There is no secret that someone else has to your success. There is only you. Your breath. Your body. Your spirit. You are the Mantra. You are the Magic.
